Franchise Highlights and Recent History
Since the Florida Marlins burst onto the baseball scene in 1993 they have
fought to forge their place in the ultra-competitive National League Eastern
Division, winning two wildcard titles in 1997 and 2003. The Marlins would later
go on to win not only League pennants in both 1997 and 2003, but also two World
Series championship titles. After their 2003 win the Marlins went on to post
another winning season (the franchises third) but were unable to overcome the
Houston Astros in the Wildcard pennant race. Dismal weather and internal
management difficulties continued to plague the Marlins during the 2005 season
as the team signed pitcher Al Leiter and first baseman Carlos Delgado to their
dwindling roster. Even though Delgado contract proved to be the biggest in
Marlin franchise history, costing the team an impressive $52 million over a four
year period, his performance was far from satisfactory, and the team would once
again fall behind in the hunt for a playoff birth. The team still managed to
post some memorable moments during the season, including Jeremy Hermida first
major-league at-bat grand slam two-run homer in the final game of the season.
Pitcher Dontrelle Willis also became the 13th member of the Black Aces as he
posted his 20th win against the Washington Nationals on September 8th. Dontrelle
was also named a National League All-Star in both 2003 and 2005, and was also
named League Rookie of the Year in 2003.
