The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the island of
Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. Whether you are staying in Sanibel or in Fort
Myers, the wildlife refuge is easy to get to with your Florida Van Rental and

the United States, making it world-famous for watching migratory bird
populations. You too can be part of this great nature preserve and join the many
other visitors to contribute. It is one of the most visited wildlife refuges in
the United States and it is always changing.
The refuge was created to preserve the natural beauty of Sanibel Island and
protect endangered species. It also plays an important role in providing space
for migratory birds to feed, nest, and roost. When you visit with your Ford Club
Wagon Econoline Vans For Rent and you will see some of the 220 species of birds
that call this area home, at least for a little while.
Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling was a political cartoonist who also had a passion
for conservation. He was an important person in the fight to protect some of the
land on the island. Darling urged President Harry S. Truman to sign an Executive
Order to create the refuge in 1945. Today there are 6400 acres of mangrove
forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes, and West Indian hardwood
hammocks.
Some of the animals you will find here, aside from birds, include eastern
indigo snakes, American alligators, American crocodiles, bald eagles, wood
storks, peregrine falcons, west Indian manatees, and Atlantic loggerhead
turtles.
