Life Is a Beach
Sanibel is well known for its shelling beaches. The island lies east to west
along the Florida coast and is a "scoop" for seashells along the beaches. These
are some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. All the beaches require you
pay for parking if you go with your Florida Van Rental and car rental.
Since Sanibel is a tourist town, there are many people visiting during the
winter months. All of the people that come to work and visit put a strain on the
roads of the tiny island, and sometimes getting around can be slow. In the
morning and afternoon rush hours, it can be easier to bike or walk.
During hurricane season, there is some risk of storms hitting. The most
serious hurricane in 44 years was in August 2004 when Hurricane Charley struck
to the north, the most serious hurricane since Donna in 1960. However, no
buildings were destroyed and only a few were seriously damaged. Residents were
evacuated and were not allowed to return until the island was in living
condition again. The island is very safe to visit at all times of the year.
